Why Debbie Became A Successful Internet Marketer
From the extensive research I have undertaken by studying this subject, I feel I have a broader understanding of the reasons behind ‘why women choose to build up a home based internet business’. I want to make it clear before you read any further, that I am not gender bashing in this article. I have simply decided to study from a woman’s angle for the purpose of this report. I am equally convinced that men also enjoy working on a home based internet business and many are very successful, although men generally have different reasons for doing this and tend to approach their business with a different set of strategies.
She threw herself into working for the company and hoped that her regular 50 hour working week would hold her in good stead for any possible promotion opportunity. This happened early on in her job and her efforts were recognised as she was given promotion to section manager when the company started to grow. With the promoted post came further responsibilities and longer hours. Long working lunches and an expense account were part of the package so it all looked good and was sure she was firmly placed on the ladder to success.
She met her future partner through a colleague and within a year decided to get married. Without going into too many personal details, life took a difficult turn and sadly her new husband became ill and had to attend regular hospital appointments and undergo several operations. Colleagues rallied round at first and her employers were initially understanding with her requests for time off.
Debbie was aware that she was taking her eye off the ball at work and acknowledged that she was missing important meetings and could not keep up with her work commitments. During a meeting with her boss, it was suggested to her that she should step down to her previous position within the company as she could not fulfil the duties of her more demanding role of section manager. This was a blow to her self esteem and added to the feeling that her life choices had been taken away from her. Her husband’s condition meant that he could no longer work and that she was now the sole earner within the household.
After many sleepless nights and soul searching, she decided to look for an alternative career which would allow her to work from home and enable her to earn her a living wage. During her working life she had acquired many skills which would stand her in good stead when running her own home based business.
She quickly realised that the internet was an open market and very soon decided on a career in this area. After extensive research she found a mentor who she trusted and could connect with and this proved to be the only necessary back up she needed. At first she worked in the evenings and weekends trying to get herself established in the world of internet marketing. She knew that this would be a good way to bring in an additional income which could supplement her loss of earnings in her full time job.
Debbie’s husband was well enough to help her navigate her way around this industry and together they made most of the usual beginner’s mistakes but learned from all of them. Success came slowly at first but after nine months of working two jobs, it became clear that this new ‘additional income job’ was growing to an extent where she was earning more in this area than her day job was bringing in. When she reached her target and became confident in her business skills, she was confident enough to resign from her job in the city and become her own boss. This involved long hours working from home but life had never been better. She was able to be there for her husband and by rescheduling her workload was able to accompany him to all appointments and they could spend more time together without the restraints of a regular job . Her husband is supportive and helpful in her new chosen career and he has benefitted by feeling useful again. He may only help her with administrative tasks, filing etc but together they have figured out a way to be in control of their own lives. Her advice to anyone facing similar circumstances would be to try it out on a part time basis and research the industry until you come across an area which you know would suit your skills. You may end up working more hours but these hours all add up to success and financial freedom.

The Power of Mastermind Groups
I often recommend that small business owners and entrepreneurs have three key tools in their “success toolbox”: a coach, a mentor and a mastermind group. I’ve covered coaching and mentoring in another article and on my web site. Let’s explore the role of mastermind groups in helping you to set and achieve your goals.
For a mastermind group to be effective, it should be small-6 to 8 people. Most groups are virtual versus local. This prevents brainstorming with potential competitors. Instead, groups meet by phone monthly for an hour or 90 minutes to discuss their values, their dreams and their action-step based goals.
Mastermind group members should be working in a similar role (entrepreneurs, online marketers, freelance writers, etc.). This allows for an effective exchange of ideas and information that everyone can contribute to. They should also be of an equal experience level to prevent experienced members from feeling there is no value in the group and less experienced members from feeling lost or intimidated.
A non-negotiable for the group members is their commitment to meeting times. Many groups charge a fee to keep everyone accountable. Regardless, everyone should add the meeting dates to their calendars and commit to it like they would a client meeting. Meeting discussions should also be considered confidential.
A mastermind group should be led by a facilitator, someone who understands group dynamics and has facilitated before. Groups fail for two reasons: lack of commitment and lack of leadership. This individual should encourage conversation, ask questions but should not be the focus of the group or dole out unsolicited advice. In other words, they aren’t there to teach but to make sure members are talking to each other and no one is being left out.
Early sessions with a mastermind group should revolve around determining every one’s personal value systems are. These are unique to you and may be radically different from everyone else. That’s ok. You can’t define your goals if you don’t know what you won’t negotiate on in your life. Is it more money, more time, more space? The group must know your values to ensure they are helping you establish goals that are coherent with your values.
Once everyone has defined and shared their values system with the group, you can move on to setting individual goals. You should not be a part of a mastermind group that thinks small. You have to be in a group of individuals who dream BIG. Set goals to achieve those big dreams, but make sure they are short-term with action steps. One of the purposes of the group is to challenge you when you are routinely not meeting goals to determine whether or not you are on a path you really want to be on.
When you gather a group of driven, engaged individuals you have access to more resources, ideas and contacts than you would on your own. This is the hidden power of joining a mastermind group! They also help you identify, and remove, stumbling blocks you might have missed on your own.
Add a mastermind group to your success toolbox! I guarantee you’ll see results.
