Walter Hill finished off the seventies with this little gem which has since become a cult legend. The Warriors mixes a cool futuristic feel with fifties rumble flicks, seventies style, and Greek legend. The difference is that The Warriors tends to focus on action where After Hours was more surreal, but the feel is very much the same as both movies simply run from one insane situation to the next.

The style of the movie is really great. You’ve never seen street gangs like these guys, they wear insane costumes and use themes like baseball teams and mimes and roller skates to focus their gangs around. The fact that the film takes place in “the near future” gives Walter Hill a lot of license to get away with whatever crazy style he wants.

The music really helps to drive the film, too. The entire film is sort of guided by the radio DJ who speaks to the street gangs mysteriously over the airwaves, playing songs to send direct messages to the various gangs on the streets, and providing a narrative voice as the story unfolds over the course of the film.

The film was based on a novel of the same name, but the two stories are really quite different. Where the Warriors in the book are more amoral, more violent and ruthless, they’re actually played as heroes in the film. Similarly, while the book paints gang life in an unflattering light, the fantasy feel of the movie justifies a sort of heroic, action movie angle to the proceedings.

There’s supposedly a remake in the works, focusing on LA Bloods and Crips in the early nineties. It’s doubtful that it will match the original, but we’ll see.

The hilarious and stunningly beautiful Bernadette Peters co-stars as Navin’s girlfriend, then wife, then ex wife, then wife, and she somehow manages to create a character that can be just as wacky as Martin’s while still playing straight man to his goofiness when the need arises.

Again, every scene’s a classic. Everyone quotes the “I don’t need anything but this!” scene, but it’s hardly the movie’s best sequence. The whole cat juggling scene really shouldn’t be watched by anyone with a heart condition, or you may just laugh your way to the hospital.

Martin went on to make The Man With Two Brains and Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. Both of these movies are funny, but neither manages to achieve the same level of consistent funniness as The Jerk. Not to knock those movies, but it’s obvious that, while those two were funny, The Jerk was more than that: It was inspired.

These days, Martin has become a real renaissance man. He’s gone beyond simply being a comedian or a comedy star, and today has proven a capable musician releasing bluegrass albums, a renowned novelist with books like Shop Girl, and even a much lauded screenwriter outside of the world of comedy with his dramatic thriller Traitor, starring Don Cheadle. Even so, The Jerk might wind up being the one he’s remembered for, even in light of his long list of accomplishments outside of film comedy.

In fact, he shot right outside of the real Burma and was given death threats by the very same army that he vilifies in the film.

The movie took a degree of courage to create, and the end result is really a film that feels authentic and true. Even if the action is a little excessive when compared to how real life conflict goes, the violence actually feels real, not glossed over. The movie is socially responsible, and at the very least, it’s the second best of the series and one of Stallone’s better action films. Both enthralling and ethical in how it handles its subject matter.

Rambo kills hundreds of badguys, yes, but ultimately, it never feels as if the weight of violence on the human soul is being cheapened. The characters are actually affected by the chaos they’re a part of. They don’t kill a dozen people and then make a wisecrack, they actually have to contemplate what the act of killing an armed opponent really does to them, where it places them in the grand scheme of things. The movie deals with these questions head on regardless of the challenges it places on the writer and director and cast. It never feels like a cartoon.

The film develops in a very pure structure. It’s really just action. It feels mythical, Biblical in its scale and scope, and it really drives home the very concept upon which it is founded, that being that war is ugly, but that you can’t just sit down and let the enemy have their way with your country. A climax is where he makes the connection that they are the same person when he sees Judy wearing Carlotta Valdes’ necklace.

He revisits San Juan Bautista with Judy determined to get the truth. He finds out that they are the same woman. The whole thing was a plot to murder Gavin’s first wife, the woman that actually fell from the bell tower.

As the couple argue, a nun appears and Judy is frightened by this and plummets down from the bell tower onto the tiles below. Scottie recovers from the vertigo.

They think that they have won by the end of the movie, but it turns out that they only delayed the, apparently, inevitable.

There are many aspects of fate to consider in this movie. Sarah was fated to be the mother of the savior of the human race. John was meant to be that savior. They never were given a choice in this. Sarah wasn’t even pregnant yet when the first Terminator showed up, so she clearly had no idea what was in store for her.

There are other issues at play here as well. Sarah Conner is in a mental institute at the beginning of the movie. This could be seen as a sort of discussion on the state of mental health care in America. Though her story does seem very crazy, and she has become quite a violent woman, she actually isn’t crazy. The audience knows that.

Yet everyone treats her like she is a completely insane woman. Are the filmmakers trying to say that, at the time this movie came out, mental health providers aren’t much more than professional guessers when it comes to mental illness? That if they don’t believe something than it must be a problem with the other person? They don’t go into this too much, so much of this has to be inferred, but there might be something there.

John Conner is supposed to be the great savior of mankind when he grows up. Yet at the time of this movie he is just a kid who has had a bizarre upbringing and is starting to get into a life of crime (stealing from ATM machines). John doesn’t actually know that what his mom has told him is true anymore than the mental health professionals think its true.

It is strange to think that if you take the time travel and the robots out of Terminator 2 – Judgment Day, then you are left with a story of an insane woman, a kid that is being bounced around in the system, and a complete lack of caring or understanding from anyone else in the world.
