The Idea Behind Offset Printing
Most companies require a printing service on a regular basis, whether it is for marketing purposes or for internal communication. Offset printing is the most frequently used printing technology and knowing about it is therefore helpful and essential.
The clients and the printers like offset printing due to its cost effectiveness for the production of large number of prints. The clients giving big printing orders are advised by the printers to choose offset printing because of this reason.
This printing technology uses oil-based ink, which the water can not dissolve. The offset printing is so called because the designs are transmitted indirectly from the plates to the paper by use of rubber blankets as the medium.
First step is to develop the graphics. Film negatives were used in the earlier times for making images and then reproducing them to aluminum based printing plates. This is no longer required as the technology is available for making the plates in one step through an image setting system. This plate is then placed on a cylinder in the proper configuration. Then the water and ink are dispersed on the image plates, in that order. While the ink gets stuck to the image, the water gets attached to that part of the plate where there is no image so that the ink does not spread beyond the image.
The image is then taken from the plates to the rubber blanket spun on another cylinder, so that it is inverted. The image is then printed with its right side facing up by cutting sheets of papers into appropriate size and putting them on a third cylinder.
Printed sheets are stapled, glued, or assembled in any other way as needed and the printing company delivers them after giving some finishing touches.
